EMG / NCV is a special diagnostic test to better evaluate the function of your nerves and muscles. An NCV/EMG examination is performed to assist in the diagnosis as to the cause of:
1. Pain, numbness, tingling in the arms, hands and/or legs
2. Muscle weakness
3. Muscle spasm
4. ParalysisThe results of this examination will be used by your treating physician to:
1. Come to a more accurate diagnosis
2. Make specific clinical decisions regarding your care
NERVE CONDUCTION VELOCITY (NCV)
This portion of the examination will test the speed of an impulse within a number of nerves in your arms, legs or both. Recording electrodes will be placed on the surface on your skin in a number of strategic places. The physical therapist will then introduce a brief electrical tap in a number of different locations. Some patients may feel a brief tingling discomfort.
ELECTROMYOGRAPHY (EMG)
This portion of the examination will evaluate the nerves and muscles of your spine and extremities. The procedure involves placing a sterile, disposable probe generally beneath the skin and muscle in a number of different locations. The number of locations examined may vary depending on your symptoms and exam findings.
